In the academic year of 2013-2014, due to structural changes, a "preparatory class" was added to the primary school in the Romanian educational system. Therefore, mandatory education starts at the age of 6 (as opposed to 7, before 2013-14) and the so-called school-preparatory groups from nursery schools were moved to primary schools. The organisation of classes shows a mixture of nursery-school and primary-school style teaching, while it demands that teachers adopt teaching methods pertaining to both systems. This calls for a change in the teacher trainee programme as well, since in addition to the ESL training English language teachers receive, they need special training to teach the prep-class group. The construct of present national teacher training programme, however, does not contain courses that develop nursery-school teaching skills. In the present paper we argue for the necessity to keep the training programme up to date and include course(s) that prepare future teachers to instruct in preparatory classes as well as on higher levels.
